I Love London!

May 19, 2019

I’ve spent much of the past week in the Big City; London that is not the quaint city that is Norwich. I had a great time but I am glad to be back in the relative calm of Norfolk. While there I saw some of the usual tourist tat, including badges and mugs proudly announcing, “I love London!”

I went to the more deprived parts of the city, not the tourist spots so I wasn’t at all sure that I ‘loved London’. I did though love the people that I met, and I loved still more the great work that they were doing. Work to turn lives around and to give people hope. I saw groups of kids hanging around trying to look hard, all probably carrying knives, then I looked closer and saw eyes full of fear. I saw people lost and hopeless.

I joined in with the projects that I visited. I played games with kids. I smiled. I listened. I learned. I saw people in the process of having their life changed for good. And the secret? Well in a way the secret was on that mug, “I love London!”

The people I saw, young and old, were being loved and were learning to love in return. People afraid and without hope, were finding something greater than their fears, and were daring to hope. It was that love and the hope that it gave that was changing lives. I watched and heard an echo of words from down the centuries, “A new command I give you, love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

God bless…
