Very Special Stories

December 25, 2012

We have heard again the Bible stories that tell us about the birth of Jesus over 2000 years ago. We have sang carols and delighted in it all. The wonder of new birth, and the hope of a new family beginning.

I feel warm inside and happy. There is so much about the Christmas story that is not nice, that is not lovely, that is far from peaceful. There is homelessness, poverty, fear, hardship and murder. But today is perhaps not the time to dwell on that.

For this morning at least, please dwell on the special gift that God has given you. This child grew up and changed history. This child grew up and forged a way for me and for you to get to know God. It is so easy to take that for granted but just think about it for a moment. Because of this tiny baby, you and I can get to know the God who created us, the God who created all things, the God who continues to make all things.

Because that baby was born, you and I have the opportunity to live a life that is full of meaning and purpose; You and I have the chance to live the life we were created to live. I commend that life to you. Our nativity stories tell us that the life of faith may not always be nice or easy. No, I can’t promise you wealth, long life, or happiness. What I can promise you is that, with Jesus, you will live a life that is full, a life of meaning and purpose. And after that, well God is faithful, even if we are not. So, after that life of meaning, I can promise you an eternity enfolded in the love of the Creator.

Read the stories again for yourself. Let the meaning sink in. Let the story inspire you once again.
